A5 Watercolour Print – ‘Softness’
‘Softness’ is a portrait that aims to challenge the ‘strong Black woman’ trope that can dehumanize Black women and suppress our emotions. This painting contrasts this reductionist idea and illustrates a Black woman who is vulnerable, delicate, soft, and worthy of rest.
Each A5 portrait has been printed on high-quality 350gsm gloss paper and I painted them using watercolours.
I chose a warm-toned watercolour palette for these portraits because I wanted each painting to embody the warmth and emotion of each person.
During the creation of the five portraits, I found that each piece evoked a different emotion or state of softness, fierceness, resistance, rest, and peace that I feel are significant parts of my Black identity.
I found this project a very emotional and beautiful process because I connected deeply with the complex emotions each painting expressed.
